PBA Opening Ceremony Muses

Every opening day, beside from the return of basketball actions, PBA fans  seem to be most excited about one thing: the  display of the angelic beauties of the muses of each team.
.

So without further ado, here’s the list of the muses who have been confirmed so far for the opening of the 2011-12 PBA season:

Alaska: Actress-model Bubbles Paraiso

B-MEG: Actress Rhian Ramos

Barako Bull: Filipino-German model Helga Krapf

Barangay Ginebra: Actress-model Solenn Heussaff

Meralco: Bb. Pilipinas International 2011 Dianne Necio and Bb. Pilipinas 2011 Tourism Isabella Manjon

Petron Blaze: Miss World Philippines 2011 1st Princess Helen Nicolette Henson, 2nd Princess Martha
Chloe McCully and Miss Photogenic Samantha Neville Purvor

Powerade: Actress Maricar Reyes

Rain or Shine: Miss Earth Philippines-Fire 2011 Michelle Gavagan

Shopinas.com: Actress-singer Iya Villania

Talk ‘N Text has opted to keep secret the identities of their muses for as long as they can. I can give you a clue, though: the Tropang Texters are parading two muses one tall and one petite.
(No, it’s not Japeth Aguilar and Jimmy Alapag, though the disparity in heights could be similar.)
Does anyone still remember last year’s opening day muses? I do.

Air 21 had Daiana Menezes; Alaska had Nancy Castiglone; Barako Bull had Bianca Bauer; B-MEG Derby Ace had Carla Abellana; Baranga Ginebra had Anne Curtis; Meralco got a group of Liwanag Girls from their employees who came with a group of Caritas kids; Powerade had Vice Ganda; Rain or Shine had Coleen Garcia; San Miguel Beer had the trio of Sam Pinto, Isabelle Daza, Georgina Wilson; and Talk ‘N Text paraded Jennilyn Mercado as Rosario — the grandmother of Tropang Texters big boss Manuel V. Pangilinan.

PBA summoned Guiao and Reyes for Tune up Tussle

MANILA, Philippines - PBA coaches Yeng Guiao and Chot Reyes are expected to be summoned by the Commissioner’s Office for their verbal altercation that marred the Talk n Text-Rain or Shine tune-up match at the Northeast Greenhills gym in San Juan last Thursday.

“Commissioner Chito Salud has asked the referees who officiated the game to report on the incident. The commissioner intends to summon the two coaches,” said PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial.

Reports have it that the incident was triggered when TnT rookie guard Pamboy Raymundo threw a punch on Rain or Shine sophomore Jonathan Uyloan.

Guiao allegedly confronted Raymundo then Reyes came to the rescue of his player, leading to a near fight between the two coaches.

The match was later resumed with the Elasto Painters outlasting an undermanned Talk n Text side, 100-96.

Meanwhile, the Tropang Texters appeared to have gained in size and ceiling with the entry of Japeth Aguilar to the team in the upcoming season.

“We see Japeth Aguilar’s size and his athleticism. He brings us up to another level,” said Talk n Text team manager Aboy Castro.

The Texters played minus key players Kelly Williams, Jimmy Alapag and Ranidel de Ocampo, who were allowed a three-week rest after reinforcing Smart Gilas Pilipinas in the recent FIBA Asian Championship meet in Wuhan.

Williams, Alapag and De Ocampo will miss the team’s first three games in the coming Philippine Cup, but team officials are hopeful they can compete with what they have.

“It’s better to rest Kelly, Jimmy and Ranidel or they’ll get burnt out. They’ve been playing basketball without rest the last 11 months,” Castro added.

Williams left for the United States Wednesday night and Alapag followed suit Thursday. De Ocampo will undergo a procedure to repair his broken nose at home.

The Talk n Text team manager said Raymundo will help Jason Castro tend the backcourt in Alapag’s absence.

“Pamboy is a tough point guard and he’s a winner. He won championships with San Sebastian in the NCAA and in the PBL. He’s also with the N-LEX champion team in the PBA D-League,” said Castro.

Meanwhile, sensational import Billy Ray Bates was to fly in from the United States with his wife last night to personally attend his induction into the PBA Hall of Fame Sunday.

Bates, the electrifying player who powered the Crispa Redmanizers and the Barangay Ginebra Kings to championships in the 80s, will go on a mall tour today as scheduled by the PBA marketing team.

Bates, together with Alvin Patrimonio, Freddie Hubalde, Tommy Manotoc, Mariano Yenko, Tito Eduque and Bobong Velez, made the fourth batch of esteemed personages to be enshrined to the Hall during the 37th PBA season inaugural rites Sunday.

Cyber Fans Day of Alaska Aces

The Alaska Aces reached out to their fans like no other team in the Philippine Basketball Association by holding their 2nd Cyber Fans Day at the Alaska Headquarters at the Corinthian Plaza in Makati last Wednesday.

The team, led by General Manager Joaqui Trillo and Head Coach Joel Banal, sat down in front of PCs fitted with WebCams for two hours to chat and interact with their fans worldwide. More than a dozen PCs were assembled in one of the conference rooms to accommodate the players who each sat in front of his own PC.

Alaska Milk Vice President for Marketing Blen Fernando said the 2nd Cyber Fans Day was a way of thanking the Alaska Aces fans for all their support and attention throughout the years. It wraps up the year-long celebration of the 25 years of Alaska participation in the PBA which concludes with the PBA opening ceremonies on Sunday October 2 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

`The players really enjoyed themselves to the point that they opened the Webcams. Dati sa unang Cyber Fans Day nahihiya pa ang players na buksan ang Webcams. Ngayon sila pa ang nagrequest. They even asked to record everything. Kaya nakikita mo na talagang nag respond ang Alaska players. The players really enjoyed the interaction with the fans from all over the world,` she said.

Yveslavedell from Panabo, Davao Del Norte asked coach Joel when the team will play in his hometown. Coach Joel replied: `Sana nga makapaglaro na kami diyan sa inyo para makita ninyo in person ang Alaska Aces pati na rin ang mga new faces sa team.`

‎Jam_box from Marikina and many other fans expressed similar sentiments saying they were elated to have Eric Salamat who compares favorably with another former Alaska Aces great in Willie Miller: `Feeling ko magiging Willie Miller ka dahil pareho kayo ng laro,` said Jam_box.

Eric expressed his gratitude for the comparisons: `Natutuwa ako na kino-compare mo ako sa napagaling na player katulad ni Willie. Sabagay maraming pagkakapareho. Pareho kami ng position. Pareho pa kaming kaliwete. Sana nga maging pareho kami ng laro sa PBA. Maraming salamat,` said Eric.

Paul_Anthony_Florencio, a longtime fan also from Marikina, asked Bonbon Custodio when he would again play in the old neighborhood. `Lumaki ako sa University of the Philippines na malapit lang sa Marikina. Madalas akong maglaro sa Marikina kaya siguro napapanood niya ako doon,` said Custodio.

Many of the fans were almost giddy to just interact with their heroes. AikoOledan from Taguig asked Jayr Reyes what position he played. The Alaska big man plays center and forward. KarenJoy another fan told Jayr she was looking forward to watching the game of Alaska against the BMEG Derby Ace Llamados to be held on October 12.

As luck would have it Ervin Sotto interacted face to face through the Webcam with a province-mate from Cavite. Unicahija_022 was from General Trias, Cavite while Ervin was from Kawit, Cavite. `Pareho kaming galing sa bayan ng mga bayani,` said Ervin. She said she watches Alaska games played at the Cuneta Astrodome whenever her scheduled allowed.

Tony Dela Cruz was invited to the birthday party of a couple from the province which he had to politely turn down because it coincided with an Alaska game.

Cherry from Singapore said she missed her basketball heroes and asked Paolo Bugia when the team would go to Singapore to play in front of the thousands of fellow Filipino basketball fans there.

Brandon Cablay assured a skeptical fan that the entire team did indeed take the time to interact with their loyal fans. He was asked: `Are you for real.` Brandon replied that he was indeed for real while waving at the fan through the Webcam.

Sonny Thoss was pleasantly surprised by a fan BossAnjo5 who asked about his newborn baby. `How`s your baby boy?` inquired BossAnjo5. Sonny replied, `He`s doing great. He`s growing very fast too. I`ll train him to play basketball as soon as he can walk.`

Sam Eman received a lot of questions many from his hometown in Mindanao. Many asked how he was doing and how he was preparing for the coming season. Sam said that apart from the regular Alaska team practices he also engaged the services of a personal trainer to strengthen and bulk up his body. Sam is now up to 250 lbs. and is raring to test his newly built up physique against the other giants in the league.

The Alaska Aces players were all happy and thoroughly enjoyed the attention and interest they received from their grateful fans making the 2nd Alaska Aces Cyber Fans Day a rousing success.

PBA Coach Ryan Gregorio Is Positive on His Players, The " Bakal Boys" of the Meralco Boltz,

POWER has been supplied for Meralco in the coming 37th season of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

The Bolts have beefed up their roster with what coach Ryan Gregorio referred to as his ‘Bakal Boys’ who’s expected to give the team the toughness it lacked the previous season.

The sophomore team landed Smart Gilas stalwart Jason Ballesteros in the first round of the recent PBA Draft (7th overall), along with his San Sebastian teammate Gilbert Bulawan (2nd round). Then the team signed from the free agent market former Letran player Bryan Faundo and the indestructible Mark Yee.

“They are what I call Meralco’s version of Bakal Boys,” said Gregorio, who momentarily left the Bolts’ coaching reins to assistant Ronnie Magsanoc heading into the new season after serving as one of coach Rajko Toroman’s lieutenants at Smart Gilas-Pilipinas in the 26th FIBA-Asia Championship For Men in Wuhan, China.

“I think we’re a much better team physically and mentally this season than last year with these players around.”

Also added into the fold are former Powerade gunners Mark Macapagal and Chico Lanete.

“We’re definitely solid in the 2 spot with the addition of Macapagal and Lanete, and the return of Mark Cardona,” Gregorio noted.

Mark Cardona and Chris Ross missed most of the Bolts’ games in the second and third conferences.

The arrival of Ballesteros, the former NCAA Most Valuable Player (MVP) also gives fresh legs to the Bolts’ frontcourt manned by 12-year veteran Asi Taulava, Reynel Hugnatan and Mark Isip.

Streak shooter Sol Mercado and forwards Nelbert Omolon and Gabby Espinas complete the Bolts’ roster for the 2011-12 season that kicks off on Oct. 2 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“Player per-player we can’t compete yet with power teams like Talk `N Text, Petron or a B-Meg,” Gregorio admitted.

“But as a whole, we’re definitely going to be more competitive this time.”

Rain or Shine Defeat Talk and text in their Tune Up Game Before the opening of the PBA 37th season

Source: AL VIADO Twitter: aldirk41

Two coaches have been at it once again as coach Yeng Guiao and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters battle coach Chot Reyes and the mighty Talk ' Text Tropang Texters in a tune-up game earlier today. This time, the Elasto Painters got the upper hand against the Tropang Texters via 100-96. And as usual, both of the teams added some color to the tune-up game especially the coaches. Words like, "Bakla" came out flying and all of a sudden a royal rumble happened. Thankfully they were pacified immediately by the officials that's why no one was hurt.

Going back into the contest, the bigger and more athletic guards of Rain or Shine such as Paul Lee did a great job in stopping the guards of Talk 'n Text. He didn't score that much but his aggressiveness and hassle halted TNT's Pamboy Raymundo.

For TNT, Larry Fonacier as usual launched some three pointers to cut the lead of ROS, but in the end his efforts fell short as ROS goes on to win this tough game.

Here are the blow by blow updates of Mr. Al Viado using his Twitter account.

*Coach Yeng and Coach Chot just exchange words, muntik nang magkaabutan ng suntukan

*76 ros 71 tnt end of 3rd. Larry hit a couple of more 3's and Japeth at least 3 dunks at that qtr..ros players trying to distract pamboy.

*I think I heard coach yeng said 'bakla' to coach chot, i dunno kung sinabihan nia coach chot or sinabhan cia ni coach chot. Tsk tsk

*100 ros 96 tnt. Coach yeng did not approach tnt bench. Tsk tsk. I like coach yeng but i think it's a bit unprofessional.

*Pamboy is a good player.

Bid For FIBA ASIA for 2013 , Manny V Pangilinan Revealed Interest

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manuel V. Pangilinan said the country has expressed interest in hosting the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship for Men.

The business tycoon told FIBA president Ivan Mainini and secretary-general Patrick Baumann about the proposal at the closing of the 26th FIBA Asia Championship for Men in Wuhan, China.

“I told them we will make our bid and I also told them one group is building a new coliseum,” said Pangilinan, who was informed by FIBA that the deadline for the submitting the bid is at the end of September.

He was referring to the MOA Arena, which is scheduled to open in May next year and can house 16,000 fans.

Pangilinan said that with the opening of the new venue and with plans afoot to refurbish the SMART-Araneta Coliseum, the country has a good chance of bagging the rights to host the biennial tournament, which will serve as a qualifying tournament for the 2014 FIBA World Championship in Spain. Three slots in the worlds are up for grab for Asia in the qualifier.

“Kinuwento ko kasi sa kanila that we will refurbish SMART-Araneta so we’ll have two good venues for basketball,” he said.

The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team is coming off a heartbreaking campaign in Wuhan. The Filipino dribblers finished fourth, losing to South Korea in the bronze medal game, 70-68, to miss the chance of playing in another Olympic qualifying tournament next year for the 2012 London Games.

Despite this, Pangilinan said he will continue to finance the elite SMART-Gilas program until 2013 to hopefully qualify for the world championship.

The SBP will evaluate the status of head coach Rajko Toroman as well as the composition of the team as members of SMART-Gilas have joined the PBA have turned professionals.

Only naturalized player Marcus Douthit and Chris Tiu are left in the team. Some of the top amateur players like Kiefer Ravena, Greg Slaughter and Bobby Ray Parks, however, are expected to be invited to be part of the SMART-Gilas program.

PBA Coach Yeng Guiao on Smart Gilas Pilipinas

As a coach, Yeng Guiao does things differently from the rest of his colleagues. His unique approach to the game has made him one of the PBA’s best coaches, with a reputation for leading unheralded teams that always seem to overachieve.
So when it comes to the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Guiao, the coach of the 2009 team that represented the Philippines in the FIBA Asia Championship, has an opinion that differs from conventional wisdom.

SMART-Gilas was originally conceived as a three-year program to develop some of the best amateur cagers in the country into a fighting unit to try to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. Tapped to handle the squad was Serbian mentor Rajko Toroman, a veteran international coach who coached Iran to the title in the 2007 edition of the Asian championship.

But Guiao thinks that neither of those two elements was the most important factor for the success of SMART-Gilas, which placed fourth in the recently-concluded FIBA Asia championship, the Philippines’ best finish in the biennial competition in 24 years.
“[Naturalized center] Marcus Douthit is the biggest reason for the success of the SMART-Gilas program,” Guiao told InterAKTV. “He is the ideal big man, a player who can pass, defend and score — the type of player we were looking for two years ago.”

The fiery Rain or Shine coach added that the addition of PBA players to bolster the team proved that the PBA is still “the best source of talent” when it comes to basketball.

“The idea of having collegiate and amateur players representing the country in elite tournaments had already been defeated as early as last year when SMART-Gilas decided to ask for reinforcements from the PBA,” he added. PBA players Kelly Williams, Jimmy Alapag, Asi Taulava, and Ranidel de Ocampo ended up joining SMART-Gilas, while another pro, Dondon Hontiveros, reinforced the team for several tournament before leaving for personal reasons.

“Ganun din pala gagawin nila eh, they will ask help from the PBA, so why stop the idea of having our bets players playing for the country? In fact, yung mga nakita nating naglalaro now for the FIBA Asia are mainly pro players. Maraming mga nawalan ng pwesto because PBA players were able to take their spots. Nawala na sina Dylan Ababou, Jason Ballesteros, and then hindi na rin nagagamit halos sina Japeth [Aguilar] and even Mark Barroca.”

Top priority

Despite the uncertain future of Toroman with the team, Guiao said the priority for the program should be finding a replacement for the other foreigner on the team: Douthit.

“Let’s face it, Marcus Douthit is 31 years old and is at the peak of his career, but we don’t know if he will play with the same effectiveness two years from now,” he said. “So, it would be more important to search for someone who will take his place the moment he retires.”

He added that it’s paramount for the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, the country’s basketball federation, to work together with the PBA to form a fighting team.

“Parang similar dapat sa USA Basketball where the creating body will be asking for help from the NBA, ganun din naman ang nangyayari dito  sa Pilipinas. They are asking help from the PBA,” said Guiao.

“May conflict na agad sa schedule considering the fact that we’ve already went back to a three-conference format,” he noted. The league had earlier adjusted its calendar to play only two conferences to allow players to compete for the national team in the offseason, but went back to the traditional format with the formation of SMART-Gilas

“But the PBA should think about their involvement. They’re already involved in a way by loaning some of the league’s best players,” added Guiao.

PBA involvement

Still, some members of the league’s Board of Governors welcome the possibility.
Powerade governor JB Baylon has been one of the most outspoken members of the board when it comes to the issue of lending players to the national cause. He earlier said that his team will allow rookies Jayvee Casio and Marcio Lassiter, two SMART-Gilas stalwarts, to play for the Philippine squad in the future if asked.

“The PBA must always be open to the idea of helping the national team,” said Baylon.
Former league chairman Rene Pardo, for his part, said that the league remains open to the idea.
“The PBA has always been supportive of the national teams in the past and will continue to support in the future,” he said.

But league chairman Mamerto Mondragon wouldn’t give a definite answer when asked whether the pro league is willing to once again lend its players to the national cause.

“There are two basic conditions that should be considered before we can lend our players to the national team – conformity of players’ team and if the tournament has no conflict schedule with the PBA,” he said. “This has been the policy of the league.”

But with the PBA back to playing three tournaments a year, a major adjustment would be needed to accomodate the national team.

Philippines Ranking in FIBA World

A pair of fourth-place finishes in two tough FIBA tournaments put the Philippine men’s basketball team in the top 50 in the latest ranking of FIBA.

The Philippine five, known as the the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team, jumped from 53rd to 45th (10.8 accumulated points) in the latest ranking by the world governing body in basketball.
That was a +8 jump by the Filipino dribblers who finished fourth in both the FIBA Asia Champions Cup, which the country hosted, and the recently concluded FIBA Asia Championship for Men in Wuhan, China.
The country’s rise in the ranking was the third highest among the affiliate members of FIBA.
The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia was the best mover with +14, jumping from No. 47 to No. 33 (25 pts) while Great Britain had a +13 increase in its ranking to occupy the No. 43 spot (12 pts) , only two spots ahead of the Philippines.
United States of America remains the No. 1 ranked basketball team in the world followed by FIBA Europe champion Spain. Argentina occupied the third spot.
The country’s significant move in the FIBA ranking showed the efforts being done by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to put the country back as part of Asia’s elite.
SBP is being headed by Manny V. Pangilinan, who made a bold announcement that he won’t stop in chasing the Olympic dream as his gift for the basketball-loving nation.
Though they fell short in their target in the 26th FIBA Asia event, the SMART-Gilas quintet gained the respect of the field with including the top FIBA officials led by President Ivan Mainini and Secretary-General Patrick Baumann.

PBA Players Will Back up Smart Gilas Pilipinas In Asian Games

Big names from the Philippine Basketball Association could soon find themselves playing for the national team anew, especially in elite Asian basketball tournaments like the FIBA Asia Championship, the qualifying event both for the Olympics and the World Championship and the Asian Games.

PBA commissioner Chito Salud vowed that the pro league will keep its doors open when it comes to serving the country by representing the national team in international tournaments.

“All (the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) should do is inform us about the calendar and the league will make adjustments on the schedule,” Salud told InterAKTV. “We will sit down with the SBP to discuss the plans. The PBA’s door is always open when it comes to serving the country and we’re mandated to support the SBP.”

The PBA is one of the stakeholders of the SBP and part of its commitment is to help the national team in the elite tournaments.
Yeng Guiao, former head coach of the Powerade Team Pilipinas, which represented the country in the FIBA Asia tournament two years ago, earlier urged the PBA to get itself more involved in the creation of the national team.
“They’re involved in a way, and most of the players who played for (the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team) in the recent FIBA Asia Championship are playing in the PBA,” said Guiao.

Tim Cone, coach of the Philippine Centennial Team to the Asian Games in 1998, believes the PBA should help out but not get themselves “more involved” in the formation of the national team.

“We would help them, but not disrupt them,” said Cone. “The Gilas program is a successful program, which is why they have overachieved in the FIBA Asia Championship.”

“And I don’t see any reason why we should change a successful program. Changing Rajko Toroman as coach means changing the whole program. It’s a program designed of training and developing players. That’s why the likes of Jayvee Casio, Mac Baracael, Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz were developed and became better players. I expect Gilas to become better in the next two years,” added Cone.

Jong Uichico, head coach of the all-pro national team to the 2002 Busan Asian Games, believes the PBA cannot avoid helping the national team, especially in major international tournaments like the FIBA Asia Championship.
“Hindi natin maiiwasan ‘yan. The bulk of talented players are playing in the PBA,” said Uichico. “I believe it’s only ideal to have the core of the squad to be back in the next two years, possibly a team composed of PBA players and a mixture of a few young players from the collegiate and amateur level.”

“Gilas will certainly need PBA’s reinforcements. Hindi nga nila kinaya in their three-year program, what more in the next two years,” added Uichico.

Thanks to Ranidel De Ocampo of PBA, Smart Gilas Pilipinas is Now in Semi finals IN FIBA ASIA

WUHAN (FIBA Asia Championship) – Ranidel De Ocampo has produced the game of his life at the right time, helping guide the Philippines past a determined Chinese Taipei and into the FIBA Asia Championship Semi-Finals for the first time since 1987, and a step closer to their first Olympics since 1972.

The 29-year-old power forward had 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot in less than 10 minutes as the Philippines turned a nine-point deficit into a 54-48 lead. De Ocampo would finish with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists in what he rated as perhaps his best ever performance for his country.

“If it’s not the best it’s definitely one of the best,” said De Ocampo, who is playing at his first continental championship after debuting with the national team in 2001.

“I am just so happy to be playing at a FIBA Asia Championship, and I am so happy for my country.”

De Ocampo had been a solid contributor for his country over the first six games of the tournament, averaging 6.5 points and 4 rebounds per game in nearly 17 minutes per contest.

But with Taipei looking on the brink of a big upset in the second quarter of their Quarter-Final, De Ocampo decided it was his turn to step up.

He said it was a scenario he and the team were well prepared for.

“We talked before the game, no matter what happens – we go down by six or we go down by eight – we have to stay focussed and keep our composure,” he explained.

He and his teammates did exactly that, overwhelming Chinese Taipei 95-78 to book a date with Jordan in the Semi-Finals.

As always, Marcus Douthit led the way for the Philippines with 37 points and 10 rebounds, while Marcio Lassiter accumulated 13 points and eight boards. Tseng Wen-Ting (20 points), Chen Hsin-An (14 points) and Lin Chih-Chieh (10 points, seven rebounds, five assists) never stopped trying for Chinese Taipei, who will now face Iran in a classification game.

The first quarter was a see-sawing affair played at breakneck speed, with Taipei taking a 23-19 first quarter lead despite 10 points from Douthit. Chen had eight points of his own in the first term, and big man Tseng joined the party, racing to nine points and giving Taipei their 37-29 lead.

De Ocampo lifted and Joseph Casio proved the spark the Philippines needed, scoring two quick baskets to launch a 16-5 run to finish the half and give his team a three-point lead.

When De Ocampo scored seven quick points to start the third quarter the game quickly got out of Chinese Taipei’s reach. The margin was 13 at three quarter time before the Philippines comfortably saw off every Taipei challenge in the final quarter.

De Ocampo said another thing driving the team on is all the support they are receiving from back home.

“I want to thank all the Filipino supporters and basketball fans,” he said, before sending a message back to the Philippines.

“Nothing is impossible. We just have to keep praying and hoping that we make it to the finals.”

And what about the Olympics, dare he think of London just yet?

“That would be great. Everybody in the world knows about Filipino boxers, then they would find out about Philippines basketball too!” he said proudly.

“You never know. Even though we are an undersized team we have the heart.”

Smart Gilas Pilipinas will Collide with Chinese Taipei for Final Four Berth in Fiba Asia (Live Stream)

It's do-or-die for Smart Gilas-Pilipinas when the quarterfinal stage of the 26th FIBA-Asia Championship For Men begins Friday at the Wuhan gymnasium in China.

The Nationals will be up against Chinese Taipei at 6 p.m., one of four knockout matches set for the day. Winners will advance to a similar do-or-die encounter in the semis on Saturday.

As the second-ranked team in Group F, the Nationals earned the right of facing the Taiwanese, who finished third in Group E. Chinese Taipei has not won over the Philippines in the last two years.

Gilas swept Chinese Taipei in the four games they played, including two in this year's Jones Cup basketball tournament where they won by an average of 11.0 points, the last of which an 82-72 decision in the battle for the bronze.

Despite the Nationals' winning record against the Taiwanese, coach Rajko Toroman believes Chinese Taipei remains a dangerous foe. "You'll never know what will be going on with Chinese Taipei."

Toroman said Chinese Taipei appeared to be a better team today compared to last month's Jones Cup, having finished third in Group E after the second round for a 3-2 (win-loss card).

Still, he remains wary of what the Taiwanese could do. "If their outside players started to shoot the ball well, we'll be in trouble," the Serbian coach said.

On top of Totoman's radar are star player Lin Chih-chieh and inside banger Wen-Ting Tseng, both of whom are playing in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).

The 29-year-old Lin, as a testament to his playing ability, just finished a two-year contract with CBA team Zheijang Lions, who signed him in 2009 for a monthly salary of $15,000 (roughly P630,000).

Toroman said he believes Gilas has the right tools to contain Chinese Taipei's streak-shooting forward just what like they did to prolific Japanese shooter Takuya Kawamura, who has limited to 12 points on a 3-of-11 clip in the Nationals' 83-76 win.

"This is the reason why I'm optimistic, although the most important thing now is still the quarterfinals," said the 52-year-old Toroman, who guided Iran to the 2008 Beijing Olympics after winning the FIBA-Asia championship a year before.

A win by Gilas meant surpassing the eighth place finish of the Philippine team during the 2009 staging of the tournament and marked the first time in a long while the country will be in the Final Four.

A win will also put Gilas and Toroman in a showdown against his former team Iran, if the two-time defending champions get past Jordan, in the next round.

The other knockout matches feature two-time defending champion and Group E top team Iran against Jordan, South Korea versus Japan, and Group F No. 1 squad and host China opposite Lebanon. — JVP, GMA News
