Petron's Import Fazekas scores 45 points in Blaze win over Air 21

AKTV/Paolo Papa
Petron is slowly but surely adjusting to its new offensive philosophy.
“Before, slow lang opensa naming. Ngayon, we’re using our quickness sa mga ball screens namin,” said Petron coach Ato Agustin after the Boosters booked a 102-88 triumph over the Air 21 Express on Wednesday’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Guards Alex Cabagnot and Denok Miranda provided the quickness as they combined for 25 points while Arwind Santos contributed 12.
But it was import Nick Fazekas who did most of the damage as he finished with a season-best 45 points and 22 rebounds for the Boosters, who notched their second consecutive win after losing their first two games.
He was the first player to have at least 40 points and 20 rebounds since B-MEG import Clif Brown did it in the 2010 Fiesta Conference.
The Boosters bucked a slow start and made a run in the second period by turning to their defense. They held the Express to just a lone field goal during an eight-minute stretch as Petron turned a 31-22 deficit to a 45-36 lead off a Cabagnot lay up with a minute to go before the half time break.
Air21’s only field goal in that span came from import Marcus Douthit, who had a jumper in the 6:18 mark. He also ended the long stretch with a dunk in the last 45 seconds of the period.
Fazekas and the Boosters delivered the knockout blow in the fourth quarter as they scored 30 points in the final period to put away the Express.
It was the first loss for Air 21, who debuted with a 97-88 win over Barako Bull last February 19.
The scores:

Petron (102) – Fazekas 45, Cabagnot 13, Santos 12, Miranda 12, Ildefonso 7, Agustin 6, Yeo 3, Doruelo 2, Tugade 2, Reyes 0.

Air 21 (88) – Douthit 23, Duncil 18, Jazul 12, Ritualo 12, Isip 10, Omolon 6, Sison 4, Sena 2, Hubalde 1, Escobal 0.

Quarterscores: 22-27; 48-39; 72-69; 102-88.

Ginebra's New Import, Jackson Vroman Replaced Chris Alexander

Several fans of Ginebra Gin Kings in PBA are  still shocked by the news, as fan favorite Chris Alexander will be replaced by a NBA veteran Jackson Vroman for the rest of the PBA Season 37 Commissioner's Cup.

The 7'1 Giant  Chris "The Great" Alexander will be replaced by the 6'10 Jackson Vroman. I was told that Chris will be shifted to the Asean Basketball League (ABL) to play for the San Miguel Beermen, SMC's team in the ABL. Though this is not what the majority of the Ginebra fans want, Chris will have to leave his beloved Ginebra team to give way for Vroman. Perhaps his departure is for the betterment of his team. We'll see in the next few days if Ginebra will become a much better team with Vroman in the helm instead of Alexander. Alexander managed to help Ginebra get 2 wins this Conferece that's why they have a 2-1 win-loss record. Let's just wait and see if Vroman will be able to make a greater impact than Alexander.

To those who are not familiar with Vroman, he's a naturalized Lebanese basketball player who plays the Center position. He has a lot of basketball experience to offer. He played in the FIBA Asia for Lebanon and he also played in the NBA particularly for the New Orleans Hornets and the Phoenix Suns. What I like about him is that he is quite fast for his size. He's a very dynamic big man who loves attacking the rim just like Tyler Hansbrough of the Indiana Pacers. He's also a good pick and roll player because he has great hands that can receive passes very well even in tight situations. In the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey, he averaged 14.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2 assists per game against the best of the best basketball players.

Lassiter Trade to Petron Proposal Result

AKTV/Paul Ryan Tan

The PBA has vetoed a controversial trade that would have sent Powerade Tigers star rookie Marcio Lassiter to the Petron Blaze Boosters in exchange for Noy Baclao and Rey Guevarra.
The decision comes after a special meeting by the PBA Board of Governors on the status of the Powerade franchise. Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc., the company that owns the Tigers, earlier admitted that it had been in talks to sell the team to San Miguel Corporation, which owns Petron.
In a statement, PBA commmissioner Chito Salud said that the trade was vetoed because of its effects on the league’s competitive balance,

“Upon close evaluation of the trade at hand, this office is exercising its right to VETO it and is hereby returning the same to the parties who may revise it to make the trade more balanced,” said Salud.
Lassiter was instrumental in Powerade’s Cinderella run to the finals of the Philippine Cup, where he finished third in statistical points. Baclao and Guevarra are second-stringers for the Boosters.
In the same statement, Salud made it clear that no sale has been concluded between SMC and CCBPI, which means that trades between the two teams would still be allowed, making Petron and Powerade free to make revisions on the Lassiter trade and submit it once more to the PBA.

Powerade vs Rain or Shine Results

  • POWERADE IN COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN DEDICATED TO RESIGNED GOVERNOR

Powerade, the Philippine Cup’s Cinderalla team, is not yet done pulling off surprises.
Though in a difficult situation, the Tigers got off to a triumphant start in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, fighting back from a 17-point deficit and nipping the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 122-120, Friday night at the Cuneta Astrodome.

The Tigers put on display the very character they built in their breakthrough showing in the recent all-Filipino tourney, squeezing out a stirring win they dedicated to former boss JB Baylon. “The team is really facing difficult times. There’s the resignation of Boss JB, the trade talks and the impending franchise sale. It’s good that our import gave us hope then there’s also Gary (David),” said Powerade coach Bo Perasol. Baylon resigned from his post at Coca-Cola Friday morning, effectively also giving up his function as Powerade’s representative to the PBA board of governors as vice-chairman.

Dwayne Jones imposed his 6-foot-11 frame to collect 34 points and 21 rebounds while David sizzled with a 7-of-12 three-point shooting and a total of 32 points as the Tigers pulled another one against the Elasto Painters.

Jvee Casio and Marcio Lassiter also made impact with the former creating key plays and the latter coming through with big defensive stops in the crunch as the Elasto Painters topped the same team they beat in seven games in the semifinal round in the Philippine Cup.

Casio scored all of his 14 points in the second half and completed a double-double game with a career-high 13 assists, including the dish that let David bang away the deciding three-pointer with 13.7 seconds left to play.

Rain or Shine had a chance to send the game into overtime but Jeff Chan misfired his own three-point attempt in the ensuing play.

It was a heart-rending victory for the Elasto Painters who blew away a 17-point spread at 76-59. They were still in control at 117-112 before Casio struck with a triple and a breakaway layup then Sean Anthony scored on a tough shot off RoS import Duke Crews in a decisive blitzkrieg, sending Powerade ahead at 119-117 with time down to 46 seconds. Crews, who logged 23 points and 12 rebounds, scored off Jones to tie the count at 119 nine seconds later.

Then came David’s dagger three-pointer, capping their win and yet another 30-point showing by the cold-blooded gunman from Dinalupihan, Bataan. The RoS starters got the team to a good start, giving the Elasto Painters a 33-24 lead in the opening quarter. The reserves later sustained the effort of Crews and company as Rain or Shine took the half at 59-50. The Elasto Painters banked on their balanced offense to offset the 18-point productions of Jones and David in the first 24 minutes of play.
David spiked his first-half performance with a perfect 4-of-4 three-point clip.

Curiously, only three other Powerade players in Ricky Calimag, Lassiter and Francis Allera scored for the Tigers in the first half.

Rain or Shine stretched its lead to 17 early in the second half but Powerade rallied to within six twice before the third quarter came to a close. (SB)

The scores:

POWERADE 122 - Jones 34, David 32, Casio 14, Lassiter 13, Calimag 11, Anthony 9, Vanlandingham 6, Allera 3, Martinez 0, Lingganay 0, Kramer 0, Cruz 0, Adducul 0.
RAIN OR SHINE 120 - Crews 23, Norwood 16, Chan 13, Arana 13, Quinahan 12, Cruz 10, Belga 9, Lee 8, Buenafe 7, Ibanes 7, Matias 2.

Quarterscores: 24-33, 50-59, 83-94, 122-120

B-MEG, Barako Bull dispute solo lead; Petron, Meralco tussle

Opening day winners B-MEG and Barako Bull go for the early lead as they clash Wednesday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome. Game time is set for 5:15 p.m.
The Llamados and the Energy are coming off contrasting victories.

B-MEG outlasted the Meralco Bolts, 96-93, behind a strong showing from import Denzel Bowles, who debuted with 27 points and 11 rebounds.

The Energy, on the other hand, had a much easier time in disposing of the Alaska Aces, 98-78, as two-time Most Valuable Player Willie Miller exploded for 25 points.

Miller is expected to engage in a scoring duel with fellow two-time MVP James Yap. The Llamados’ superstar guard scored 18 points in his team’s victory.

Having Bowles, Yap and the rest of the team on the same page has made B-MEG coach Tim Cone satisfied, but they will have their hands full against the Energy, whose wing position is expected to create a lot of problems, according to the multi-titled bench tactician.

“They have a first-round NBA veteran import in DerMarr Johnson, who is likely to pose a lot of problems for different teams,” said Cone. “You cannot put an import to guard him because he plays from the outside. This means we have a lot of adjustments to make and shuffle our line up a bit more when we go up against them. DerMarr and Willie Miller easily give Barako a 1-2 threat from the perimeter.”
For Barako Bull coach Junel Baculi, it will require his team playing good defense for the entire 48 minutes of the game for them to have a shot at beating B-MEG.

“This is an old phrase, but defense is the key to beating B-MEG. We were able to limit Alaska to 78 points in our last win, but we believe we cannot do that against B-MEG. Still, you have to give your best effort defensively and that would be the biggest test for our resolve,” added Baculi.
Baculi said Johnson admitted having a lackluster performance in his debut game.

“He was disappointed on himself. In fact, he told me that those three shots which he missed, he can make them even in his sleep,” said Baculi.
The Petron Blaze Boosters and Meralco Bolts, two teams that suffered tough setbacks in their first assignments, slug it out in the main game at 7:30 p.m.
The Boosters may have found a gem of an import in NBA veteran Nick Fazekas, who debuted with 37 points and 18 rebounds against the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings. Fazekas hit a clutch triple late in the game to tie the count, but Jayjay Helterbrand knocked down a jumper at the buzzer to lift the Gin Kings to an 84-82 win last Sunday.
The Bolts will rely on import Jarrid Famous and Mac Cardona, who combined for 56 points against B-MEG in their first game.

Trade Rumors in PBA, Lassiter to Baclao and Guevarra

AKTV/Paul Ryan Tan

Amid reports of the sale of its PBA franchise, Powerade is trading one of its top players to the Petron Blaze Boosters, the flagship squad of San Miguel Corporation, which has been rumored to buy the Tigers team.

Multiple sources with knowledge of the deal told InterAKTV that Powerade is planning to send rookie Marcio Lassiter to Petron in exchange for Noy Baclao and Rey Guevarra.

Picked fourth overall in this season’s rookie draft, Lassiter has emerged as one of the best players in the league, ranking third in the statistical points race in the Philippine Cup behind Petron’s Arwind Santos and Powerade teammate Gary David, and established stars James Yap of B-MEG and Alex Cabagnot of Petron. With David and fellow rookie JVee Casio, Lassiter helped the Tigers embark on a Cinderella run in the recently-concluded Philippine Cup.

Baclao and Guevarra, who were drafted first and third in the 2010 draft, were tipped to contribute heavily for the Boosters after the erstwhile San Miguel Beermen acquired them in a blockbuster trade with Air 21 last season. But the duo have seen limited playing time in the Philippine Cup, with Baclao playing an average of just 11.3 minutes over 21 games and Guevarra appearing in just 10 of the Boosters’ 23 games.

The deal still requires the approval of the PBA. League commissioner Chito Salud has the right to revise or veto deals that he deems imbalanced.

PBA media bureau head Willie Marcial said the league office has yet to receive paperwork for any such deal.

Report of the transaction comes in the midst of murmurs that the Tigers will once again become part of SMC. The Philippine Daily Inquirer on Thursday reported that the team has been sold to the conglomerate, but Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc., the company that owns the Powerade team, denied the story.

Coke’s PBA franchise used to be part of SMC, before the corporate giant sold its stake in CCBPI in 2006. Under terms of that transaction, SMC retained right of first refusal to buy the PBA team if Coke decided to sell it.

Despite the denial of Coke, officials of other PBA teams expressed alarmed over the development. One team executive who requested anonimity feared that the purchase would allow SMC to strengthen its current teams by acquiring top players from the Tigers.

Many PBA franchises on the way to being sold or disbanded have seen their marquee players transferred prior to their sale or disbandment.

In 2009, Sta. Lucia traded star players Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes to Talk ‘N Text a few months before the franchise was sold to Meralco, which is owned by the Manuel V. Pangilinan group that also controls the Tropang Texters. InterAKTV is part of InterAksyon.com, the online news portal of TV5, which is chaired by Pangilinan.

In 2006, top Coke players Rudy Hatfield, Rafi Reavis, and Billy Mamaril were traded to Barangay Ginebra before SMC let go of the franchise.

In 2005, top players from Shell including Tony dela Cruz and Rich Alvarez (Alaska), Billy Mamaril (Coca-Cola), Roger Yap (Purefoods), and Ronald Tubid (Air 21) were traded to different squads before the team left the PBA.

In 2001, Tanduay traded stars Eric Menk to Ginebra and Dondon Hontiveros to San Miguel before selling the franchise to the FedEx Express.
