Barako Bull Beats Petron

Barako Bull import Leroy Hickerson challenges the defense of Petron's Chris Lutz.

Barako Bull import Leroy Hickerson showed no signs of jetlag as he teamed up with Ronald Tubid and Doug Kramer to lead the Energy to a 111-107 come-from-behind win over Petron in the PBA Governors Cup Friday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Hickerson, who arrived early Friday morning, had a near triple-double effort behind game-highs of 32 points and seven assists to go with eight rebounds.

Tubid and Kramer tallied 17 points each with the former shooting 7-of-10 from the field and the latter grabbing 10 rebounds.

"We were lucky. It's good that Leroy (Hickerson) has played here before. He (Hickerson) knows some players of ours and Petron, he also knows Eddie (Baden)," said Energy coach Junel Baculi.

"Hopefully we can follow it up (with another win) on Wednesday," he added as Barako will face the Air21 Express on June 13 at the Big Dome.

Baculi said they fetched Hickerson from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport then accompanied him to the Games and Amusements office (GAB) and to the PBA headquarters in Libis, Quezon City.

"He's in (game) shape but during our pre-game huddle, his eyes were red. He let the locals run the show for a while then when he rested the locals took over especially Willie (Miller)."

A Chris Lutz three-pointer gave Petron a 14-point spread, with still over three minutes left in the secondperiod. The Boosters still enjoyed a 91-81 lead in the final minute of the third period.

A Tubid trey, in the closing seconds of the third, sparked Barako's comeback.

The Energy used a 21-14 exchange, matching every basket made by the Boosters, for a 105-105 count with one minute and 52 seconds left in the game.

A Basden reverse lay-up put Petron ahead for the last time, 107-105, as the Energyscored the last six points to complete the comeback win.

Hickerson's shot block over Basden highlighted Barako's closing 6-0 run.

Miller finished with 16 points while Leo Najorda added 10 markers for the Energy, who evened their record to 2-2.

Gary David Lead Powerade Put An End to Rain Or Shine Winning Streak in PBA

Rain or Shine's Jamelle Cornley (2nd right) challenges a phalanx of Powerade defenders.

Gary David and Powerade put an end to Rain or Shine's four-game rampage in the PBA Governors Cup Friday night as the Tigers hacked out a 104-98 decision at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

David shot 11-of-34 from the field, going 2-of-9 from the three-point range to finish with a team-high 30 points. He was perfect from the free throw line (10-of-10) and grabbed five rebounds in 37 minutes on the floor.

The Tigers improved to 3-2 to join defending champion Petron at third place behind the 4-1 slate of their victims and the 3-1 card of Commissioner's Cup titlist B-MEG.

Momentum seemed to have shifted in Rain or Shine's favor when Ryan AraƱa fired five straight points, including a triple, as the Elasto Painters grabbed a slim 80-79 lead.

But Jvee Casio kept the Tigers afloat as the former La Salle Green Archer either scored or got his teammates involved in Powerade's offensive set.

David's reverse lay-up gave Powerade a 96-91 lead with under three minutes left in the game. Both teams exchanged baskets for the rest of the game.

Omar Sneed backed-up David's offensive performance with 24 points, 20 rebounds and seven assists. Casio added 12 markers and seven assists while Lordy Tugade scored 11 more for the Tigers.

Jamelle Cornley paced the Painters with 31 points and 17 rebounds, while Jervy Cruz finished with 15 markers and eight boards.

Growing up, Paul Lee’s favorite PBA team was Ginebra. Now that he’s in the league, Ginebra stills seems to be his favorite team… to torture. Lee’s three-pointer with 2.6 seconds left gave Rain or Shine a 93-90 victory over the Gin Kings. Shortly afterwards, Paul Lee’s name was among the trending topics on Twitter worldwide.
