The Blaze Boosters used a furious second quarter run and remained in
cruise control the rest of the way for an easy 98-73 victory over the
San Mig Coffee Mixers Friday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

The win gave Petron its first Commissioner’s Cup victory after
dropping its opening assignment against GlobalPort, which it lost after
leading by as much as 18 points in the first half.
Seven players scored at least seven points for Petron, which outscored San Mig Coffee, 28-8, in the second quarter.

That allowed the Boosters to take a 26-point lead at the half, 48-22.
Petron never trailed by less than 16 points the rest of the way.
“Playing against San Mig Coffee, we know we have to put up a good
defensive effort against a good executing team. We had this mindset of
depensa muna bago opensa,” said Petron coach Olsen Racela.
Renaldo Balkman led the charge for Petron with 28 points, 15
rebounds, five assists, and two blocks, apart from a highlight reel dunk
in the third quarter over San Mig Coffee import Matt Rogers, who was
making his PBA debut after missing the Mixers’ first game due to food
poisoning. Jay Washington and Alex Cabagnot added 17 and 15 points,
respectively.
“More than the good numbers provided by Balkman, it was the intangibles, the energy and hustle he provided,” added Racela.
Rogers scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but struggled from
the field shooting just 7-of-19 (37 percent). James Yap carried the
fight for San Mig Coffee with 25 points, but was hampered by an injury
late in the game.
The loss dropped the Mixers, the tournament’s defending champion, to a 0-2 win-loss record to start the conference.
The scores:
PETRON 98 – Balkman 28, Washington 17, Cabagnot 15, Lassiter 9,
Fajardo 8, Miranda 8, Santos 7, Tubid 4, Faundo 2, Lanete 0, Pena 0.
Dawson as the Aces carved out an 85-81 victory Wednesday night at the
SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Dozier posted 27 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocks for the Aces,
which grabbed a share of the early Commissioner’s Cup lead with a
perfect 2-0 record, tying idle Barako Bull.
Dawson, who scored 37 points in his debut against Talk ‘N Text last
Saturday, was held to just 15 points on woeful 5-of-16 shooting (31
percent) by the stifling Alaska defense.

That left the Meralco locals led by Vic Manuel, who topped the Bolts
with 18 points, to carry the fight for his team. Meralco stayed within
striking distance in the second half, coming within four points on a
three-pointer by Ronjay Buenafe with less than two minutes remaining.
The Bolts lucked out after Alaska deadshot JVee Casio missed two free
throws in the ensuing play, but neither Buenafe nor Mac Cardona could
bring Meralco closer in the next possession.
Cyrus Baguio gave Alaska more breathing room by splitting his free
throws with 20 seconds left, before Buenafe hit another three-pointer to
move the Bolts closer, 83-81, with 12.8 seconds left.
But Tony Dela Cruz hit two free throws to put more distance between
the Aces and the Bolts, and Alaska foiled Manuel’s final attempt to seal
the win.
Calvin Abueva added 20 points and eight rebounds for Alaska, while Cyrus Baguio chipped in 16.
The scores:
ALASKA 85 – Dozier 27, Abueva 20, Baguio 16, Casio 8, Espinas 6,
Thoss 6, Dela Cruz 2, Ramos 0, Jazul 0, Eman 0, Hontiveros 0, Belasco 0.
Philippine Cup champion Talk ‘N Text is right where they hoped to be –
on top of the standings.
The Tropang Texters played tough defense down the stretch against the
Petron Blaze Boosters, holding their rivals to a single field goal in
the last five minutes, en route to a 95-82 triumph at the SMART-Araneta
Coliseum to secure one of the top two spots and the twice-to-beat bonus
in the eight-team PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals.

“We’ve achieved our target, which is securing the top spot and a
twice-to-beat advantage. We played with a total team effort and played
with balanced offense,” said Talk ‘N Text coach Norman Black.
The game was tied, 66-all, at the end of three quarters and was close
up until the last six minutes, where Petron trailed by just a single
point, 81-80, after free throws from Alex Cabagnot.
But the Tropang Texters were able to outscore the Boosters, 12-2, in
the last five minutes as Talk ‘N Text closed out strong to stay on top
of the standings with an 11-2 card.
“We’re trying to find our identity. I told them that if we can focus
on defense, we have a chance of winning basketball games,” said Black.
“We made some adjustments in the second half, particularly on the
defensive end. Everybody buckled down on defense.”
No player was able to score for Petron Blaze after Arwind Santos made a bucket at the 3:19 mark of the fourth period.
Talk ‘N Text’s victory snapped Petron’s three-game winning streak. The Boosters fell to a 6-7 card and dropped to seventh place.
The scores:
TALK ‘N TEXT 95 – Castro 23, Williams 14, Reyes 12, Alapag 11, De
Ocampo 10, Peek 9, Dillinger 8, Fonacier 6, Carey 2, Aban 0, Alvarez 0.
The hardworking rookie Abueva brought his usual energy and the rest
of the Aces grinded out an 88-85 win over the Meralco Bolts in the PBA
Philippine Cup on Wednesday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Abueva led his team both in scoring and rebounding in his first game
back since being hospitalized due to nasal infection. He finished with
20 points, 18 rebounds and two steals in 36 minutes of play.

The barely 6-foot-2, do-it-all forward, was all over the floor –
hustling, chasing down loose balls and helping out on defense as well as
scoring and grabbing rebounds.
“Calvin is a warrior all his life. You see what he brings to the
table. He’s all over the place,” said Alaska coach Luigi Trillo. “He’s
not a dirty player, he rebounds, brings energy to the team and that
rubbed off on the rest of the team.”
Although Abueva proved to be steady all game long, the Aces needed
two crucial three-pointers from JVee Casio and Mac Baracael inside the
final two minutes to outlast the Bolts.
Casio, whose three-pointer hit the backboard before going in, tied the count for the last time at 82-all.
In the return play, the Bolts failed to execute, and the Aces
punished them by finding Baracael, who was wide open from the left
flank. The 6-foot-3 sophomore forward sank the trey for an 85-82 count,
with still more than a minute left.
Another unproductive thrust by the Bolts led to a fastbreak by Alaska
and Cyrus Baguio kept things well in hand for the Aces by finishing on
transition for an 87-82 lead.
Reynel Hugnatan completed a three-point play for the Bolts in the next play to give his team one last push.
With only 9.5 seconds left, Meralco opted to foul Casio, who split
his charities and left a window of opportunity for the Bolts.
Unfortunately, the Bolts’ Ronjay Buenafe missed a trey.
Cliff Hodge chased the ball and attempted from deep left while
drawing a contact from Abueva. The referees, however, waived the foul
called on Abueva after reviewing that there was no more time left on the
clock.
The scores:
ALASKA 88 – Abueva 20, Baguio 19, Baracael 12, Thoss 12, Casio 9,
Espinas 7, Jazul 6, Dela Cruz 2, Eman 1, Reyes 0, Hontiveros 0.
MERALCO 85 – Ross 14, Cardona 14, Hodge 13, Hugnatan 11, Mercado 10, Borboran 9, Nabong 6, Reyes 5, Buenafe 3, Salvacion 0.
Playing with a sense of urgency, Petron Blaze faced a real test against emerging contender Rain or Shine.
And the short-handed Boosters responded to the challenge.
The Boosters had six players that finished in double figures with
Chris Lutz leading the way, but it was Petron’s defense against one of
the hottest teams in the tournament that proved to be the difference in
their 96-86 triumph in the PBA Philippine Cup at the SMART-Araneta
Coliseum on Wednesday.

“Uso ang bull session sa mga teams na nag-struggle,” said Petron
coach Olsen Racela. “We reminded each other to stop talking, but it’s
time to start to play.”
“The key to this win is that we limit the No. 2 offensive team. We held them down tonight,” he added.
The Boosters came out of the halftime break fresh and full of energy
as they clamped down on the Elasto Painters’ big guns. Petron limited
Rain or Shine to just 12 third-quarter points, while unloading 33 points
at the other end to turn an expected tight struggle into a rout.
Rain or Shine trailed by 22 points, 57-79, entering the last quarter.
They made a huge run in the fourth, but simply ran out of time.
“We needed a win badly, not just for the team standings, but also to
get our confidence back,” said Racela. “I was also having doubts myself
after we lost three straight games, but the players helped me and I got
my confidence back.”
In snapping a three-game slide, the Boosters improved their record to 4-6.
Lutz finished with 19 points followed by Arwind Santos’ 16. Jay
Washington contributed 14 markers while Marcio Lassiter chipped in 12.
Alex Cabagnot had 11 and Denok Miranda added 10 in a display of balanced firepower by the undermanned Petron squad.
The scores:
PETRON (96) – Lutz 19, Santos 16, Washington 14, Lassiter 12, Cabagnot 11, Miranda 10, Faundo 6, Yeo 6, Duncil 2, Ildefonso 0.
RAIN OR SHINE (86) – Chan 20, Belga 14, Quinahan 11, Cruz 10, Rodriguez 10, Tang 8, Ibanes 6, Matias 4, Norwood 3, Arana 0.
Quarterscores: 25-15, 46-45, 79-57, 96-86.
San Mig Coffee pulled off a masterful 78-68 win against undermanned
Barangay Ginbera San Miguel to share the second spot with two other
teams in the finale of a rare triple-header in the 2013 PBA Philippine
Cup Sunday at the jampacked SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

The Coffee Mixers found the right mix early in the game, while the
Gin Kings never found its rhythm to absorb their fifth straight defeat
after starting the tournament with back-to-back wins.
The win shoved San Mig Coffee into a triple tie for the No. 2
position in the standings with Rain or Shine and the streaking Alaska
with identical 5-2 win-loss records.
Joe Devance fired a game-high 18 points, including back-to-back
three-pointers that helped the Mixers pull away. They erected their
biggest lead at 73-51 with 7:30 remaining in the game.
Ginebra never had a serious run since.
James Yap added 14 points while Peter June Simon and Marc Pingris contributed 13 and 11, respectively, for San Mig Coffee.
“We played a great defensive game plan. There were times that Ginebra
could shoot us on the foot but they missed lay-ups. Their layups won’t
fall and it happens when you lose some games,” said San Mig Coffee coach
Tim Cone.
“We did play good defensively, although [we got] a little sloppy in the fourth. But we’re sharp defensively.”
Already without Kerby Raymudo (flu), Ginebra lost another player in
Dylan Ababou in the first half due to a suspected torn ACL. Gin Kings
coach Siot Tanquingcen did not utilize Jayjay Helterbrand (hamstring)
and Allein Maliksi (ankle injury) who were also nursing injuries in the
game.
It is Ginebra’s longest losing streak since dropping five straight in the elimination round of the 2009 Fiesta Conference.
Mark Caguioa led the Gin Kings with 16 points while LA Tenorio and Chris Ellis added 12 and 11, respectively.
The scores:
SA NMIG COFFEE 78 – Devance 18, Yap 14, Simon 13, Pingris 11, De
Ocampo 7, Barroca 6, Reavis 4, Villanueva 3, Intal 2, Gonzales 0.
Barangay Ginebra San Miguel forward Dylan Ababou hurt his right knee in the Gin Kings’ match against San Mig Coffee Sunday.
Team management told InterAKTV that Ababou is feared to have torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the play.
In an interview with AKTV’s Erika Padilla, Ababou said he felt his
knee pop during a drive to the basket. The former University of Santo
Tomas forward said he had been favoring his other leg, which had been
hampered by a hamstring injury, putting more strain on his right leg.
Ababou was scheduled to be brought to St. Luke’s Hospital.
He joins a list of hurting Ginebra players, which already includes Kerby Raymundo, Allein Maliksi, and Jayjay Helterbrand.
Raymundo is reportedly in the hospital suffering from flu while Maliksi is nursing an injured ankle.
Helterbrand, on the other hand, is recovering from a hamstring injury, but was in uniform against San Mig Coffee.
DYLAN ABABOU WILL BE OUT FOR 6-8 Months for ACL SURGERY
Rain or Shine caught Meralco on a bad night and posted an emphatic
106-81 win in the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta
Coliseum.
The Elasto Painters’ defense took the energy out of the Bolts early,
allowing them to coast to the much-needed victory to join Alaska at
second spot with a 5-2 win-loss mark.

“One way to redeem ourselves coming off a loss (against Talk ‘N Text)
was to play our best game against the hottest team,” said Rain or Shine
coach Yeng Guiao.
“But I’m really surprised we beat them in the manner we beat them
today. We just got our rhythm both on offense and defense and we’re able
to run our breaks.”
The 25-point margin was the team’s most since its 113-83 demolition of Air 21 last March 16 in the Commissioner’s Cup.
Jireh Ibanes led all scorers with 23 points and was Guiao’s main
defensive weapon on Meralco’s deadly backcourt of Mac Cardona and Sol
Mercado.
Beau Belga added 16 points, Ryan Arana had 15, while JR Quinahan
contributed 10 in a balanced attack for the Elasto Painters, who led by
much as 33 points, 94-61, midway in the fourth.
Cardona finished with 20 but Mercado struggled with nine points on 3-of-14 shooting from the field.
“We were ready to play match up against their top three guards, Sol,
Mac and Ronjay (Buenafe),” said Guiao. “We did not let them get their
usual confidence and rhythm in their past four wins and I think that’s
the key.”
Buenafe, a member of the Rain or Shine squad that won the Governors’
Cup last season, had a quiet 11-point output in his first game against
his former team.
Meralco rookie Cliff Hodge had nine points, most of which were scored
in garbage time, and 14 rebounds, 10 off the offensive end, but was
plagued with foul trouble throughout the game. The Bolts’ record fell to
4-3.
The scores:
RAIN OR SHINE 106 – Ibanes 23, Belga 16, Arana 15, Quinahan 10, Tang
9, Cruz 8, Chan 7, Rodriguez 7, Norwood 6, Matias 5, Uyloan 0, Jaime 0.
Ronal Tubid made up for his booboo in a previous play and converted
the go-ahead to lead Barako Bull to a pulsating 95-94 win over GlobaPort
in the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

After missing a point blank attempt, Tubid received a pass from a
falling Sean Anthony after a wild scramble for the loose ball. The
wingman from Iloilo hit an undergoal basket with 18.1 seconds left in
the game to push Barako Bull.
“I told Ronald before the scramble, instead of passing, step up to
the plate. This is his game. He’s our No. 1 guy in the shooting guard
position,” said Barako Bull coach Junel Baculi.
The Batang Pier had a chance to steal the game, but Josh
Vanlangdingham missed a three-pointer as time expired. The Energy Colas
snapped a three-game losing streak to push their win-loss mark to 3-5.
“Medyo struggling ang team. Hopefully this win can prop up us
especially Josh (Urbiztondo). We need Josh in our team,” said Barako
Bull coach Junel Baculi.
“The problem is we have to improve our offensive sets. We can’t rely
much on Rico (Villanueva) on the post because teams are scouting us. We
need to inject some variations in our offense.”
Tubid led the Energy Colas with 19 points, but almost turned into a
goat after his late miss. Villanueva added 18 points while Mick Pennisi
and Leo Najorda contributed 13 and 11, respectively, for Barako Bull.
GlobalPort’s loss spoiled Mark Yee’s 20-point performance, one shy of
matching the career-high he set two years ago. Willie Miller had 17
points in 43 minutes, but missed a crucial attempt before Tubid’s
basket.
The scores:
BARAKO 95 – Tubid 19, Villanueva 18, Pennisi 13, Najorda 11, Anthony 9, Urbiztondo 9, Yap 9, Kramer 4, Alvarez 3, Ballesteros 0.
JVee Casio caught fire, and not even the vaunted Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters could stop him.
The sophomore guard played one of the finest games of his young
career, scoring 12 points in the final three minutes including the
go-ahead layup that propelled the Aces to a hard-earned 94-92 triumph
over erstwhile unbeaten Talk ‘N Text in their Philippine Cup match
Friday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Casio’s heroics came at a perfect time. In a minute-long stretch late
in the game, he scored 10 straight points — three three-pointers,
including one four-point play — to bring the Aces back against the
Tropang Texters.
Alaska trailed by as much as 12 points, 83-71, in the fourth quarter,
before Casio, Cyrus Baguio, and Calvin Abueva scored the final 23
points for the Aces.
Casio’s last basket, a driving scoop shot to elude the long arms of
Kelly Williams put the Aces ahead, 94-92 with two seconds left in the
game.
“I have to give it to JVee. The game was out of hand, but he simply
refused to lose,” said Alaska coach Luigi Trillo, whose team notched its
fifth straight victory to improve its win-loss record to 5-2.
“He made us look good. Games like this one builds character.”
The Aces still needed to make a stop in Talk ‘N Text’s final play.
Jimmy Alapag, normally the team’s go-to-guy at the clutch, was assigned
to do the inbound from the sidelines. Larry Fonacier came off a screen
and got the pass. He was perfectly squared for a short jumper but his
shot went in and out as time expired. The Tropang Texters’ perfect
record was finally blemished by the resilient Aces for the first time in
seven games this conference.
It was the first win by Alaska over Talk ‘N Text since the 2010 Fiesta Conference.

Air 21 resurrected its A-game on All Soul’s Day, spoiling what could
have been a post-birthday celebration for Petron coach Olsen Racela.
Using a different starting unit, the Express grounded the Boosters
for a surprisingly easy 97-76 triumph on Friday night at the
SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

“It’s one of those games where certain teams will have this kind of
game, but it’s a long season,” said Air 21 coach Franz Pumaren.
“Still, I have to give credit to my players as we were able to defend well against Petron.”
Air 21 had only won one game coming into the match against the powerhouse Petron squad, which was on a two-game winning streak.
But the Express kept the Boosters at bay from start to finish,
neutralizing Petron’s running game which was on display in its previous
outing against the GlobalPort Batang Pier last Friday.
“I was watching Petron and I found out they’re good whenever they
have the ball and they would continue pushing. But we paid extra
attention on their running game, which they used against GlobalPort.”
Mark Isip, playing the starting power forward role for the Express,
finished with 22 points and seven rebounds while Rob Reyes, playing for
the first time against the team that traded him in the offseason, came
off the bench to score 17 points and grab six rebounds in what was
easily his finest game of the season.
“We’ve finally found the right starting unit. Our coaching staff made
very good preparation and scouted Petron pretty well. We were able to
maximize some mismatches. We’re also a different Air 21 today, playing
more aggressive and outworking our opponents. We had an advantage as we
had five days off,” said Pumaren.
The Express were able to post leads of 25 points in the fourth
quarter, as Petron simply had no answer against the energized Air 21
side.
The Boosters were led by Arwind Santos’ 15 points and 14 rebounds,
but the team shot only 34.2% from the field (26-of-76), and were beaten
by the Express on second chance points, 15 to six.
The scores:
AIR 21 97 – Isip 22, Reyes 17, Custodio 12, Canaleta 12, Omolon 11, Baclao 9, Wilson 5, Taha 4, Arboleda 3, Ritualo 2, Atkins 0.
Up against a team expected to play with a lot of emotion after losing
a heartbreaking loss to San Mig Coffee, Ryan Gregorio knew how to
motivate his squad.
“We just have to make sure we will match the emotions of Barako Bull and the best way is to play good defense,” said Gregorio.
The Bolts kept the taller Energy Cola out of their comfort zone all
the way to winning 99-86 in the PBA Philippine Cup Wednesday night at
the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Sol Mercado finished with 22 points, six rebounds and six assists
while five other players finished with at least eight markers for the
Bolts, who unloaded 34 second-quarter points to turn a once close
encounter into a decisive victory.
Ronjay Buenafe and Mac Cardona contributed 16 points apiece, Reynel
Hugnatan had 12 markers and Cliff Hodge and Sunday Salvacion had eight
points each for the Bolts, who improved to 4-2 win-loss mark.
“The best thing about our team now is that nobody cares who gets the
credit for the win. Whatever we lacked with ceiling, we compensate with
quickness. We’re now 4-2 so we have the best six-game start of our young
franchise,” added Gregorio.
The scores:
MERALCO 99 – Mercado 22, Buenafe 16, Cardona 16, Hugnatan 12, Hodge

Big Game James saves San Mig Coffee from GlobalPort upset axe

When the game is on the line, expect big time players to take center stage.
In a battle of two-time Most Valuable Player winners, James Yap and
Willie Miller found themselves in a scoring duel at the end of the game
between San Mig Coffee and GlobalPort.
In the end, it was Yap who got the job done.

The San Mig Coffee superstar scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth
period, all of which came in a key juncture, as the Mixers survived a
gritty challenge from the Batang Pier for a come-from-behind 82-78
triumph Wednesday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Yap had back-to-back baskets at the low block against the tight
defense of Mark Yee, including the go-ahead basket with 40 seconds left
that pegged the score at 79-78.
San Mig Coffee forced a stop against Miller in the ensuing
possession. Forced to give up a foul, GlobalPort sent Mark Barroca to
the charity stripe, where the sophomore guard split his free throws,
giving GlobalPort one last chance to win the game or send it into
overtime.
GlobalPort rookie forward Vic Manuel had a chance to tie the count
but flubbed his short stab, before Barroca was sent to the line anew.

This time, Barroca made both his charities to ensure the Mixers’ fourth win.
Cone wasn’t completely satisfied with the win, but said he would take it.
“You look at all our wins, they were tough. Right now, I wish we can
be a lot smoother, move the ball better. In the meantime, we will take
the ugly wins, but hopefully we can win pretty down the line,” said Cone,
who praised his counterpart.

“Coach Glenn Capacio did a great job, particularly with his quick
line up that took Yancy (De Ocampo) off the floor, we got to take him
out of the floor because we cannot match up with them. Finally, we were
forced to match up with them. But Ping did a great job defensively while
James made some big shots down the stretch.”

Tim Cone credits ‘best defensive player in the league’ Marc Pingris for San Mig Coffee win

It was San Mig Coffee superstar James Yap who hit the biggest shots
down the stretch against GlobalPort, but for Mixers coach Tim Cone,
defensive demon Marc Pingris was every bit the hero.
Pingris came up with several defensive gems late in the game to
preserve the Mixers’ 82-78 victory, hounding GlobalPort ace Willie
Miller down the stretch.

“For five or six years, he’s been the best defensive player in the
league,” said Cone. “He should win the [Defensive Player] award every
year.”

The athletic forward had a season-high 17 points along with 16
rebounds, helping San Mig Coffee come back from a 15-point deficit. Cone
said it’s not a coincidence that Pingris has more spring in his step on
offense when he gets a tough assignment defensively.
“If you give him a defensive match up, everything changes about his game,” said Cone.
Cone said that part of his job is to make sure that Pingris gets a
defensive assignment that will get him fired up about the game. Pingris,
according to his coach, motivates himself by trying to figure out how
to stop his man from scoring.
“What makes him more special is he can guard anybody. He’s one guy who can slow anyone down.”

The scores:

San Mig Coffee (82) — Pingris 17, Yap 16, Simon 15, Barroca 11,
Devance 11, De Ocampo 4, Ramos 2, Villanueva 2, Gonzales 2, Reavis 2.

GlobalPort (78) — Miller 19, Manuel 17, Deutchman 7, Antonio 7,
Mandani 6, Guevarra 6, Vanlandingham 5, Adducul 4, Vergara 3,
Al-Hussaini 2, Yee 2, Cruz 0.
On Sunday night, members of the Barako Bull Energy Colas were up in
arms over their 92-91 loss to the San Mig Coffee Mixers. They were
contending that Mixers center Rafi Reavis had committed a goaltending
violation on the potential game-winning shot by Enrico Villanueva.
But the PBA explained that Reavis’ move was legal, since the league
adopted FIBA rules on goaltending five years ago. A look at the actual
FIBA rules bears out the PBA’s position

.
Goaltending and Interference is covered in Article 31 of the Official Basketball Rules.
Sections 31.2.1 and 31.2.2 define what constitutes goaltending:

31.2.1 Goaltending occurs during a shot for a field
goal when a player touches the ball while it is completely above the
level of the ring and:
– It is on its downward flight to the basket, or
– After it has touched the backboard.
31.2.2 Goaltending occurs during a shot for a free
throw when a player touches the ball while it is in flight to the basket
and before it touches the ring.

These goaltending restrictions apply until the conditions defined in section 31.2.3:

31.2.2 The goaltending restrictions apply until:
– The ball no longer has the possibility of entering the basket.
– The ball has touched the ring.

There is some vagueness over how the two conditions are written; just
by reading it on its face, one can interpret that both conditions must
become true, or that only one condition has to be true.
In practice, however, the spirit of the rules become clearer. For
example, imagine a shot that ends up being an airball. You can grab and
tip the ball after an airball, even if the ball never touched the ring.
In this case, only the first condition becomes true, but it still leads to the lifting of the goaltending restrictions.
This means that only one condition needs to be true for goaltending
restrictions to be lifted. This makes it legal for players to touch the
ball as soon as it has touched the ring.
On Twitter, Barako Bull forward Sean Anthony cited another part of the rules, which reads: “No player shall touch the ball after it has touched the ring while it still has the possibility of entering the basket.”
That sentence is part of section 31.2.5, which reads:

31.2.5 When
– An official blows the whistle while the ball is in the hands of a player in the act
of shooting, or the ball is in flight on a shot for a field goal,
– The game clock signal sounds for the end of a period while the ball is in flight
on a shot for a field goal,
No player shall touch the ball after it has touched the ring while it still has the possibility of entering the basket.
All restrictions related to goaltending and interference shall apply.

The sentence highlighted by Anthony only applies during the first two
conditions: when an official blows the whistle on or after an attempt
(i.e., an and-1 play), or when the clock sounds after an attempt.
Neither of these conditions applied to Villanueva’s shot. This means
that it doesn’t matter whether or not the ball has a chance to go in.
Rafi Reavis’ swipe was a perfectly legal move; it wasn’t goaltending.
Alaska delivered another ace of a game that led to one more Barangay Ginebra San Miguel checkmate.
The Aces stretched their winning streak to four matches after pulling
off a masterful 87-69 victory against the skidding Gin Kings to grab a
share of second spot in the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the
SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Rookie Calvin Abueva fell a rebound short of notching his third
straight double-double performance, but it was enough to lift Alaska to
its fourth straight win to join Rain or Shine at the No. 2 spot with a
4-2 win-loss mark.

For Ginebra, it was the team’s fourth loss in a row after a 2-0 start, leaving them sliding deeper in the team standings.
“I think we’re lucky because Ginebra is not on its best now and
probably with chemistry issue right now,” said Aces coach Luigi Trillo,
who drew 19 points and nine rebounds from Abueva.
“But I thought the bottom line [was] in the first quarter Ginebra had
22, 16 in the second, 14 in the third and 17 in the fourth. Ginebra is a
team that runs and it’s their strength. I think our defense did it
today.”
Jvee Casio chipped in 16 points for the Aces while Cyrus Baguio
netted 14. RJ Jazul and Sonny Thoss contributed 12 apiece for Alaska,
which led the game from start to finish.
Dylan Ababou had 14 points in his first game back with Ginebra this
season, but others failed to contribute for the Kings who shot miserably
from the field (22-of-61).
Ababou’s three-pointer put Ginebra within three points, 51-48, in the
third quarter. But an 11-0 explosion by the Aces capped by Abueva’s
jumper pushed their lead back to 62-48, with 2:02 remaining in the
period.
The lead ballooned to as high as 20 points, 81-61, after Baguio and
Casio banged in a three-pointer each in a run that put the game away,
silencing the dominant pro-Ginebra crowd.
It was Alaska’s first four-game winning streak since the Aces swept
Ginebra in the 2009-10 Philippine Cup semifinals under former coach Tim
Cone. That was also the last time the Kings have lost four in a row.
“It’s nice to win four in a row. The last time we did this was coach
Tim’s time,” said Trillo who was then one of the assistants of Cone.
The scores:
Rafi Reavis made a heady play in the dying seconds to help San Mig
Coffee preserve a 92-91 victory over Barako Bull in a thrilling finish
in the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Reavis swatted the ball away from the cylinder on an attempt by Rico
Villanueva with about two seconds remaining to secure the much-needed
win for the Coffee Mixers

.
“I don’t see any controversy there. That’s legal in our league,” said San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone.
“We’re using FIBA rule [on goaltending]. You can knock the ball on
the rim. It’s not the NBA rule anymore. And it was really a smart play
by Rafi. He keeps on doing that since they changed the rule four or five
years ago.”
It was a sorry loss for the Energy Colas, who trailed by as much as
12 points in the third period before rallying back in the fourth quarter
behind Ronald Tubid.
James Yap led all scorers with 21 points but missed a couple of shots
in the closing minutes that allowed Barako Bull to get back in the
contest.
Peter June Simon added 15 points, including the marginal basket,
while rookie Aldrech Ramos had his best game with 10 for the Mixers, who
snapped a two-game skid for a 3-2 win-loss mark.
Tubid had 17 points and was responsible for putting his team on top
with back-to-back three-pointers and a feed to Villanueva to give Barako
Bull 91-90 lead with 1:18 remaining.
Simon reclaimed the lead for San Mig Coffee after he followed up a
Yap’s missed jumper, 92-91, with just 19.4 seconds left on the clock.
Then came the controversial finish as Villanueva’s attempt, which
appeared to be trickling in, was denied by Reavis, who tapped the ball
while on the rim as time expired.
Barako Bull players and officials vehemently protested the non-goal tending call.
“They should let the players decide. If you asked my opinion, it was
counted,” said Barako Bull coach Junel Baculi, who will confer with the
management about what steps to take. “Sayang. We were robbed of the
win.”
Villanueva added 16 points for Barako Bull, whose record fell to 2-4.
The scores:
San Mig Coffee (92) – Yap 21, Simon 15, Ramos 10, Barroca 9, Gonzales
9, Pingris 9, De Ocampo 8, Devance 5, Reavis 5, Villanueva 1.
“Hindi ko nga napapansin yung stats niya, but he had another double-double performance. But I think there are better games out there for Calvin,” said Alaska coach Luigi Trillo.

“I can’t remember the last time we won three, but I think that happened with Jason Forte as our import.”

But Abueva wasn’t the only one who came up with big plays.

JVee Casio, who missed the Aces’ last practice as he was not feeling well, stepped up and played steady basketball. He had 19 points on three three-pointers along with five assists.

“Defensively, we’ve been working hard. In our last two games, we were down big, but defense brought us back. JVee made things difficult for Wynne Arboleda. He was able to wear the veteran down and that took its toll on Air 21,” said Trillo.

With their defense working double time, the Aces were able to jump the gun on the Express en route to a 50-33 halftime lead.

Dondon Hontiveros and Cyrus Baguio finished with 15 points apiece. But Baguio suffered a knee injury late in the game that has Trillo worried.

“Mukhang tuhod ang tama ni Cyrus. He can’t even walk. We’ll have to get an MRI for him and hopefully it’s not serious,” said Trillo

Despite being shorthanded up front after injuries to centers June Mar Fajardo and Danny Ildefonso, Petron showed up relaxed and confident to notch their third win in six games.

“I gave the players more freedom and that resulted to us scoring 110 points. But this game also gave us an indication that we needed to work hard on defense as we gave up 98 points,” said Racela.

“But that’s a given thing. If we had difficulty defending our opponents, then we should also give them a difficult time with our offensive game.”

Arwind Santos, the most consistent player on the Boosters side, came through with a season-high 29 points and 17 rebounds.

Petron led 91-78, but saw their lead trimmed to five in the final three minutes. But Cabagnot scored five straight points to weather a late rally by the Batang Pier.

Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao had no explanation for how his team pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind victory against the San Mig Coffee Mixers.
“Don’t ask me how we won it. We played ugly basketball, but we still won the game,” Guiao said in the post-game interview.

The Elasto Painters fought back from 18 points down in the third period and came up with one big shot after another in the clutch as they completed an exciting 80-79 comeback win over the Mixers Wednesday night in the PBA Philippine Cup at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Jeff Chan lost in his individual battle with counterpart James Yap, but came through with the baskets that mattered most, including a pair of four-point plays, the second of which enabled his team to tie count at 77-all with more than two minutes remaining.

Chan finished with 22 points while Yap, who was ejected at the 2:34 mark of the fourth quarter, scored a game-high 28 points for the Mixers.

The San Mig Coffee superstar played his best game of the season, but was thrown out for hitting Jireh Ibanes on the face while the latter was going for a basket in transition. Ibanes missed his free throws, but Chan netted a four-point play in the ensuing possession to tie the game.

As if that wasn’t enough, Beau Belga followed it up with a dagger triple that broke the deadlock – the last of the game – and give the Elasto Painters an 80-77 lead with 1:50 left in the game.

Without their normal go-to-guy, San Mig Coffee got a little bit disorganized.

The Mixers had their chances, though, as PJ Simon drilled in a jumper to shove his team within striking distance.

JR Quinahan then muffed two free throws in the last five seconds of the game. The Mixers rushed to the other end, but Jonas Villanueva missed a potential game-winning jumper as time expired, allowing the Elasto Painters to escape with the win.

“We will first enjoy this win, watch the tape and see how we won this game. This win is beyond analysis and assessment, but this will rank as one of my weirdest wins ever. Maybe there’s somebody out there. Maybe it’s coach Roehl (Nadurata) who guided us in this victory,” added Guiao.
