Barangay Ginebra San Miguel just had too many weapons in its arsenal.
The Gin Kings hit one big shot after another to come away with a thrilling 98-94 win over Rain or Shine to seize the solo lead of the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Lordy Tugade Decided to retire In the PBA

Tugade is one of the most athletically gifted homegrown players to
grace the pro league floor, armed both with graceful moves around the

Tugade had looked forward to the festivities every year, and had graced it every time in his shining new playing uniform. For the first time in 12 years, he wasn't part of it - and the feeling, he said, wasn't nice.
“Masakit pa, eh,” Tugade, who decided to retire before the end of the season, told Spin.ph.
They say athletes are the only people in the world who die two deaths - the first when the realization hits them that their careers are at an end. It was no different with the 6-3 former Red Bull star.
“Though alam ko naman na dumarating talaga itong ganitong time sa isang player, pero iba lang, masakit pa kaya di muna ako nagpakita sa opening,” he said.
The 6-3 forward from Alaminos, Pangasinan was one of the most athletically gifted homergrown players to grace the pro league floor, armed both with graceful moves and a silky touch from long range.
Go ask Allan Caidic. The Hall of Famer considers Tugade one of the finest shooters of his generation.
He lived up to all expectations when he joined Red Bull, his best days coming during the 2005-2006 season when he made 153 of 393 shots from three-point zone - the most in his pro career.
His scintillating performances earned him his only PBA Finals MVP award while helping Red Bull to the Fiesta Conference championship, the franchise’s fourth in the pro league.
Tugade's career, however, took a dive when he left Red Bull as he bounced around from one team to another while injuries started to blight his performance.
He hit rock-bottom last season when he hit career-lows of 3.72 points and 1.5 rebounds in 13.31 minutes while an assortment of injuries limited him to just 32 games for the campaign.
Making things worse was the freak mishap he had during one practice with Petron. He was playing defense against former teammate Paolo Hubalde when, suddenly, he felt something snap on his right hand.
“Nung pina-check ko na, sinabi sa akin na nabali pala yung dalawang bones ng daliri ko sa shooting hand ko,” recalled the former National University Bulldogs star.
That turned to be the last straw.
Although Tugade was dealt last April by Petron along with youthful slotman Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevara to Powerade in exchange for Marcio Lassiter and Celino Cruz, he never joined GlobalPort, the team that had bought the Powerade franchise in the offseason.
He decided to retire at age 34.
The pain of saying goodbye to his pro career still lingers, but Tugade finds solace in having prepared early for his post-PBA life. He now spends most of his time tending to his poultry business in his native Alaminos and maintains some apartments in Greenland, Rosario, Pasig that he rents out.
“Mabuti na lang nakapag-start magpundar ng maaga...Nakapaglaro na rin naman ako ng 12 years. Malaking blessing na din kahit paano,” he said.

San Mig Coffee Easy Triump Over Alaska

The Mixers shot a steady 64.6 percent from the field (42-of-65), clobbered the Aces off the boards (50 to 37) and dished out more assists (27 to 13), leaving San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone more than satisfied with the win.
“We jumped into them early at a time when they had great expectations. We lost to them twice in the preseason,” said Cone. “They were discouraged with our shooting, we defended well and we moved the ball better. When you have that kind of game, you will end up with a 20-point win.”
Yancy de Ocampo imposed his will inside, finishing with 22 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, and two blocks while James Yap contributed 20 points despite coming off an injury.
“It’s nice to have a best player of the game aside from James. It’s an indictation that we’re moving the ball better,” added Cone.
“We just got James back yesterday in practice, Ping (Marc Pingris) two days ago, and Joe back a few days ago. We got Joe back tonight and gave him a few minutes, but he needs to lose some weight. He’s a nice weapon for our team.”
The Aces were held to only 30.7 percent shooting from the field (27-of-88) and were outmatched by the Mixers in almost all fronts.
Alaska, which made key additions in the offseason from its coaching staff to its personnel, struggled in their first game without LA Tenorio, the team’s former floor leader.
Tenorio was traded to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in a deal that netted the Aces Dondon Hontiveros and JVee Casio. Hontiveros led the way for Alaska with 14 points, but Casio struggled with just three points in his debut with his new team.

But after 53 minutes, the long-time deputy mentor got the job done, propelling the two-time defending champion Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters to a tense 112-110 victory over the Meralco Bolts Friday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
“I’m relieved,” said Racela, who is pitching in as head coach for Norman Black, who is finishing his coaching stint with Ateneo in the UAAP. “Going to this game, our objective was to win, regardless of what happens. Yun bilin ni Coach Norman.”
In Racela’s first game, Talk ‘N Text squandered a 24-point lead late in the third quarter.
Led by Jay-R Reyes, the Bolts unleashed a crippling 25-4 run . The 6-foot-7 center had six of his team’s last nine points, including a last basket in regulation off a feed by Sol Mercado that sent the game into overtime.
But the Tropang Texters showed their championship poise in the extra period.
Four straight points from Jayson Castro and Jared Dillinger gave the Tropang Texters some headway, 110-109. But a three-pointer by Sol Mercado cut the lead to just a single point.
Meralco sent Castro to the free throw line, before the Talk ‘N Text bench was called for a late technical foul for improper bench decorum. Ronjay Buenafe tied the score with a technical free throw, but Castro hit both foul shots to give his team a two-point lead.
Talk ‘N Text shadowed Mercado into a turnover to escape with the win.

Despite showing a raw game, Fajardo started the game and provided a tough presence on the low block against the shorter Rain or Shine frontline, which battled using its trademark physicality.
Blazers coach Olsen Racela gave his rookie a grade of seven out of 10.
“He has to work on a lot of things, particularly in playing tougher in the PBA,” said Racela. “Sinasabi niya sa akin, nauunahan daw siyang hawakan ng kalaban, pero yun nga ang dapat, kailangan he has to show toughness. Unahan niya na agad yung mga kalaban niya.”
Petron team consultant Rajko Toroman said Fajardo’s lack of seasoning is showing.
“He never had real basketball. His only real basketball came six months ago and he didn’t have much exposure,” said the Serbian coach. Fajardo played for the San Miguel Beermen in the ABL after suiting up for University of Cebu in college.
Toroman, the former coach of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team, believes Fajardo will take about two years before becoming a dominant force.
“There are a lot of tough players. He needs to toughen up and work on his game better. But first game isn’t a gauge. It takes time before the guys, including Fajardo, to get used to the system.”
Fajardo said he was surprised about the physicality of the game of Rain or Shine, as the frontliners caught him flat footed and out of position a lot of times.

Ronald Tubid Game Winning SHot Against Air21

The scrappy wingman from University of the East came to the perfect place at the perfect time, tipping in an Enrico Villanueva miss and providing the most important basket in Barako Bull’s tense 90-87 triumph over sister team Air 21 in the PBA Philippine Cup on a rainy Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
“In the absence of Danny Seigle, our main man was Ronald Tubid,” said Barako Bull coach Junel Baculi. “Yes, I am happy with the way Sean Anthony performed, but Tubid played the leadership role for the squad.”
Seigle missed the game because of flu, but Baculi assured the veteran forward will be back in the team’s next game against Petron Blaze, a squad which he considered as the strongest in the tournament.
Tubid’s tip-in with 9.2 seconds left proved to be the final basket.
Still, the Energy Colas had to make a stop and wait for KG Canaleta’s last three-point attempt. His three-pointer from the left corner rimmed out as time expired.

Chris Tiu Injury Updates

The former SMART-Gilas team captain, who was selected seventh overall by Rain or Shine, aggravated a nagging hamstring injury during a play in the second quarter.
Tiu saw action for a total of six minutes, finishing with two points on three attempts from the field and two assists.
His lone basket came at the 4:54 mark of the second period, and he had to leave the game several plays later as he could barely make a step.
“Bad trip nga eh. I thought OK na ako, pero nabigla ko yung galaw ko,” said Tiu, who had to content himself with watching his team on a television set in a separate room off the court. He was seated on a monobloc chair and could barely move his hips.
“I was so disappointed I couldn’t finish the game, but for me, basta manalo kami, OK lang.”
Tiu’s PBA debut was highly anticipated, drawing loud shrieks from female fans in the audience when he was inserted into the game by Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao. His fans cheered every time he touched the ball, egging on the popular player to make a move.
“I felt sorry for the fans, pero ganyan talaga basketball. I will work on my strengthening and hope I could get back the soonest possible time.”
Tiu joined the Elasto Painters’ practice three weeks before the opening of the new PBA season and saw action in two tuneup matches.
In a locker room report by Erika Padilla of AKTV, she mentioned that Tiu will likely be out for two to three games.
Charles Tiu, Chris’ younger brother and GlobalPort Batang Pier assistant coach, told InterAKTV that the 5-foot-11 guard suffered the injury during an alumni league game in Xavier School prior to joining the draft.
“With the extent of his injury, tingin ko baka umabot nga yan ng one month,” said the younger Tiu.

Racela faces a veteran coach in Yeng Guiao when the Boosters and the Elasto Painters square off at 7:30 p.m.
In the opening game, a retooled Air 21 five battles Barako Bull at 5:15 p.m.
Racela admitted that the excitement is there on his first game as a PBA coach but he wants to stay calm in his first game as a bench tactician.
“Gusto ko relax lang kasi baka maapektuhan yung team,” Racela told InterAKTV. “Kung ano mangyayari sa akin, magre-reflect yun sa team.”
Racela, who replaced Ato Agustin, said he’s been with the team for a more than a month and they are still working on a lot of things.
“Yung execution of our game, that’s something we are working on. Hindi maganda pre-season games namin pero tulungan naman kami dito,” he added.
Aside from Racela, also debuting today is No. 1 overall pick June Mar Fajardo and third overall selection Alex Mallari.
Rain or Shine, which came from a successful Governors’ Cup campaign last season, kept an intact roster plus the addition of ‘veteran’ rookie Chris Tiu.
Tiu, the former SMART Gilas team skipper, also debuts today after skipping the draft last year.
In the first game, the Express test their revamped roster against the Energy Cola, who also made key acquisitions in the preseason after losing Willie Miller in the trade.
Air 21 has new players in John Wilson and Nino Canaleta from Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Rob Reyes and Nonoy Baclao from Petron.
“Everybody is excited to play their first game,” said Express mentor Franz Pumaren who also signed rookies Simon Atkins and Yousef Taha.
Barako Bull also has new faces on its lineup in Rico Villanueva, Josh Urbiztondo, Sean Anthony, Jason Ballesteros and rookies Lester Alvarez and Dave Marcelo.
“We have to build up our chemistry at the soonest time,” said Energy Cola coach Junel Baculi. “Air 21 is pushover no more.”

On Sunday, the two newcomers put those on display, as they combined for 25 points and provided the effort that was appreciated by the Gin Kings veterans.
“They’re the energy guys,” said new Ginebra point guard LA Tenorio.
Jensen couldn’t believe the reception he got from the sellout crowd of 18,901, most of which was pro-Ginebra.
“The feeling was amazing. It’s incredible and it’s become more special because my loved ones were watching from the sidelines while some of our relatives and friends were watching in the United States,” Jensen told AKTV’s Erika Padilla.
Agent Charlie Dy, who represents both players, said Jensen’s mother, grandfather, and aunt flew in from the United States just to catch the players’ PBA debut.
Ellis said he was energized by the Ginebra crowd.
“When you have fans as big as the Ginebra fans, it will keep your energy going,” said Ellis. “But we have a great group of talented guys and as long as we’re playing together, we’ll be OK.”
Ellis and Jensen said they want to reward Ginebra’s legions of fans with the best gift a player can give.
“Nothing but a championship,” said the two players.
