Baranggay Ginebra Foiled Banals Coaching Debut in ALaska

Barangay Ginebra foiled Joel Banal’s coaching debut with Alaska, hammering out an 83-72 win in the main game of the PBA Philippine Cup Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

KG Canaleta played his best game as a King since being acquired in a trade withWillie Miller late last season, finishing with a team-high 17 points, while Mark Caguioa added 12 as Ginebra barged into the win column after dropping a heartbreaking 93-94 setback to Rain or Shine in last week’s season opener.

The Kings didn’t pull away for good until Jayjay Helterbrand scored seven straight points to open the fourth quarter and stretched a 10-point spread to 68-51, prompting Banal, who took over from Tim Cone after a 22-year reign as Alaska coach, to sue for an early timeout

Helterbrand capped the outburst with a huge three-pointer at the 10:57 mark.

Siot Tanquingcen, the Barangay Ginebra mentor, however, still sees the Aces as a top contender in the All-Filipino conference.

“That’s understood, it’s still a feeling out stage for them, pero malakas pa rin sila," he said.

Rookie Mac Baracael readily showed his potential in his pro debut, leading the Aces with a game-high 20 points and feeding off Alaska as it tried to make one final run against the highly-energized Kings.

A three-pointer by Baracael highlighted a 12-2 Alaska blast, cutting the deficit to 70-63 with six minutes to go.

But Canaleta and Caguioa came to the Kings’ rescue, hitting five straight baskets including a three-pointer by the `Spark’, giving Ginebra an 81-66 cushion and leading to chants of Ginebra! Ginebra! Ginebra! inside the playing venue. - OMG, GMA News
