PBA CAGERS Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams and Ranidel De Ocampo Give Smart Gilas Extra Clout

PBA stars Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams and Ranidel de Ocampo, thanks to them the Smart Gilas has got more offensive firepower and defensive muscle to compete in the 26th FIBA Asia championship slated Sept. 15-25.

Coach Rajko Toroman is convinced he’s now got a lineup that can compete with anybody in the Asian joust as Williams, De Ocampo and Alapag reinforced the Nationals. The three Talk n Text mainstays reported in the Smart Gilas camp a few days back. With the addition of Kelly and Ranidel, we now have a solid frontline. That’s what we need. If we had Kelly or Ranidel in the Champions Cup, we could have been more competitive in that tournament,” said Toroman.

Toroman said Williams and De Ocampo firmed up in particular their power forward spot. “Kelly is a great defender while Ranidel is very smart. I expect a lot from these guys at position four,” said Toroman. While Williams has played with Smart Gilas in the 2010 Guanzhou Asian Games, De Ocampo has just joined the team but he’s said to be fitting in perfectly.

“Ranidel understands the system. He perfectly fits our system offensively and defensively,” said Toroman. De Ocampo has been tapped as replacement to Dondon Hontiveros. He was reserve in the Philippine team to the last two Fiba Asia championships. Asi Taulava is another PBA player in the team. He’s with Smart Gilas in their Asian Games and FIBA Asia championship campaigns. Williams and Alapag should have already been with Smart Gilas as early as after the 2011 Commissioner’s Cup. However, they opted to help Talk n Text take a shot at a grand slam. (SB)
